  • Keep it in a separate high-yield account, not your checking

Glossary

Money words, in plain English.

APR
Annual Percentage Rate — the true yearly cost of a loan, interest plus fees. The only rate worth comparing.
Amortization
How each payment splits between interest and principal. Early payments are mostly interest — that's normal, not a scam.
Credit Utilization
The share of your credit limit you're using. Below 30% keeps your score happy; near zero makes it sing.
Deductible
What you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in. Higher deductible means lower premium — and more risk on you.
Fiduciary
An advisor legally required to put your interests first. If an advisor won't say the word, walk away.
HELOC
Home Equity Line of Credit — a revolving credit line backed by your house. Cheap money, serious stakes.
Compound Interest
Interest earning interest. It builds your savings exponentially — and your debts just as fast.
Premium
What you pay for insurance, usually monthly. Compare premiums against the deductible, never alone.
Refinance
Replacing an existing loan with a new one, usually for a lower rate. Only worth it when the math says so.
Underwriting
The lender's verification process — income, credit, risk. Where 'guaranteed approval' goes to die.
Secured Loan
A loan backed by collateral — your car, your house. Miss payments and the lender takes the asset.
Debt-to-Income Ratio
Your monthly debt payments divided by monthly income. Most lenders want it under 43%.
